Parkinson's Disease

At Kriz Physical Therapy, we believe a Parkinson’s diagnosis doesn’t mean you have to stop living an active, fulfilling life. Our approach begins by understanding what matters most to you, whether that’s golf, travel, or time with your grandchildren. We then build a program that helps you move bigger, more confidently, and with greater purpose.

What Is Parkinson's Disease?

Receiving a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease can feel overwhelming, and it’s natural to have questions about what the future holds. Will I keep walking independently? Will I still be able to travel? Can I keep golfing? Will I still enjoy time with my family and grandchildren?

Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological condition that affects the nervous system, particularly the parts of the brain involved in movement. Over time, many people notice changes such as:

  • Smaller movements
  • Slower walking
  • Balance challenges
  • Increased stiffness
  • Difficulty turning
  • Changes in posture
  • A softer voice
  • Less facial expression
  • Reduced confidence with movement

Because these changes develop gradually, many people don’t realize how much their movement has changed until everyday activities become harder. The encouraging news is that research consistently shows exercise, movement, and early intervention play an important role in maintaining mobility, independence, and quality of life.

What are the symptoms of Parkinson's Disease?

Everyone experiences Parkinson’s differently, which is why every treatment plan should be individualized. Common symptoms include:

  • Shuffling or taking smaller steps when walking
  • Difficulty getting out of a chair
  • Slower movements and stiffness
  • Balance problems
  • Reduced arm swing
  • Freezing episodes
  • Difficulty turning in tight spaces
  • Trouble getting in and out of bed
  • Fatigue and reduced endurance
  • An increased fear of falling

Parkinson’s affects much more than walking. Travel can become more difficult, shopping more tiring, golf more frustrating, and walking the dog less enjoyable. Getting dressed or getting in and out of the car may take longer. Some people begin avoiding activities they love, or withdrawing from social plans, because they worry about falling or not keeping up. Over time, moving less can lead to further weakness and deconditioning, making everyday tasks even harder.

What Is Our Approach To Treating Parkinson's Disease?

Many people manage their symptoms with medication, which can be very helpful and is often an important part of treatment. But it’s only one part of the picture. Others try walking more, general exercise classes, stretching, home exercises, or online videos. Staying active is important, but Parkinson’s often responds best to exercise that is purposeful and progressively challenging.

One unique aspect of Parkinson’s is that the brain gradually begins to perceive smaller movements as normal. That’s why many people don’t notice their steps getting shorter or their posture changing. That’s why our philosophy is simple: we want you to move bigger.

Our program is built on the principles of LSVT BIG, an evidence-based treatment approach designed specifically for people with Parkinson’s. It retrains the brain to produce larger, more intentional movements, so everyday activities become easier and more efficient. The goal isn’t simply exercising harder. It’s teaching your brain and body to move bigger, more confidently, and with greater purpose.

At Kriz Physical Therapy, LSVT BIG is one important part of a comprehensive Parkinson’s program. Every treatment plan is tailored to the individual and may include:

  • LSVT BIG principles and exercises
  • Balance training and fall prevention strategies
  • Walking and gait training
  • Postural exercises
  • Functional strengthening
  • Flexibility and mobility training
  • Dual-task training and cueing strategies
  • Transfer training (chairs, beds, and cars)
  • A progressive home exercise program
  • Education for family members and caregivers
  • Strategies for staying active in your community

Parkinson’s may change how you move, but it does not change who you are. Our job isn’t to count repetitions or watch you exercise. It’s to help you keep living the life you want, whether that means walking with your spouse, travelling, playing golf, keeping up with your grandchildren, or going out to dinner with friends.
